What Is Foil Woven Fabric Made Of?
October 21, 2026
Foil woven fabric is a popular multi-layer composite material widely used for thermal insulation, moisture barrier, packaging and shipping protection. Its core structure mainly includes two base materials: aluminum foil and PE woven fabric.
Core Material Composition
- PE woven fabric (polyethylene woven cloth) This is the base carrier of the whole composite. It is woven from high-density polyethylene flat yarn. The woven structure brings good tensile strength, tear resistance and flexibility. Compared with non-woven fabric, PE woven fabric has better mechanical strength and is not easy to break during conversion or construction. It supports heavy-duty applications and can be sewn easily for making thermal bags, insulation covers and bulk packaging.
- Aluminum foil layer The thin aluminum foil is laminated firmly onto the surface of PE woven fabric. The aluminum layer is the functional layer. It reflects radiant heat, blocks vapor and prevents moisture penetration. This is the reason foil woven fabric has excellent thermal reflectivity and waterproof performance.
Some suppliers add extra LDPE adhesive layer between foil and woven substrate for lamination. A qualified lamination bond prevents delamination under folding or temperature changes. Low-grade products often fail at this bonding part.
Common Buying Pain Points for Buyers
Many importers run into troubles when sourcing foil woven fabric from China:
- Confused by similar product names: Suppliers mix up foil woven fabric, metallized film woven fabric and aluminum foil non-woven fabric. Quotes differ greatly while product performance is not what you expect.
- Delamination issue: Poor lamination makes the aluminum layer peel off after repeated bending. The insulation and moisture barrier effect drops quickly.
- Unclear thickness & weight standard: GSM and foil thickness are not clearly marked. Some sellers use ultra-thin aluminum foil to cut costs.
- Inconsistent tensile strength: Inferior PE woven base breaks easily, not suitable for heavy packaging or outdoor use.
- Bad waterproof performance: Pinholes on cheap aluminum foil cause moisture leakage.
Quick Selection Comparison
- Foil woven fabric: Aluminum foil + PE woven base. High heat reflection, strong tear resistance, good moisture barrier. Best for reusable thermal bags, pallet insulation covers, construction vapor barrier.
- Metallized film woven fabric: Vacuum metallized PET film + PE woven base. Lower cost, shiny look, but weaker heat resistance and easy oxidation. Fit for one-time packing, low-budget outer wrapping.
- Aluminum foil non-woven fabric: Aluminum foil + PP non-woven. Soft, cheap, low tensile strength. Not for heavy load or frequent folding.
FAQ
Q: Is foil woven fabric waterproof? A: Yes. The continuous aluminum foil layer blocks liquid water and water vapor. Note that pinholes or bad lamination will ruin waterproof performance.
Q: Can foil woven fabric resist high temperature? A: Normal grade works under 80°C–100°C. It is not designed for direct open flame or long-time high-temperature exposure.
Q: What is the difference between PE woven and PP woven for this composite? A: PE woven is more flexible and better at low temperature. PP woven has higher rigidity. Most standard foil woven insulation products choose PE woven substrate.
Q: Can I customize the size, foil thickness and GSM? A: Yes. Most Chinese manufacturers support custom width, length, aluminum thickness and total weight for bulk orders.
Closing
Foil woven fabric gets its reliable insulation and barrier function from the combination of reflective aluminum foil and strong PE woven fabric. When placing orders, confirm foil thickness, total GSM, lamination quality and test samples first. Clear material specs help you avoid quality mismatch and extra loss.
